The Global Cycling Network YouTube channel is a platform that many road cyclists will be familiar with. The channel has a massive international audience and is produced in Bath, not too far away from The Bicycle Academy.
Simon Richardson of GCN first got in touch with us with the intention of making a film at The Bicycle Academy, he wanted us to help him build a classic all steel road bike.
We wanted to make something totally awesome to share with the GCN audience; something they might not have seen before. After further discussion Simon was really excited by the idea of creating something more contemporary, we offered him the chance to exploit all the benefits of modern steel manufacture and contemporary bicycle design.
Simon gave us a new brief. He wanted a bike that was fast, stiff, responsive and agile. He also wanted it to fit wider road tyres and to use a 1X groupset. Tom Sturdy, Head of Education, worked with Simon’s bike fit measurements to create a frame that would deliver these characteristics and look absolutely awesome.
The GCN film crew visited The Bicycle Academy workshop on several occasions during the build, this gave Simon the opportunity to contribute to the construction of the bicycle frame. Jake Rusby and Tom Sturdy worked around the clock to put together the majority of the build and it was finished off with an incredible paint job designed by GCN. The bike was finally unveiled to the public and exhibited at the Bespoked Bicycle Show.
When the bike was delivered to Simon he was over the moon. After taking it for a spin he got in touch to tell us this...
“Holy smoke that’s a smashing little bike! It’s a flipping awesome bike, what a mega bit of kit”
