Cosmic Purple Dream

One of the legendary TBA Grinduro bikes recently made a special appearance at an off road group ride hosted by cycle clothing company Rapha and route planning application Komoot. Rapha is a bit of a household name in the cycling industry but Komoot is still something of an unknown resource to many. Komoot has this to say of it’s route planning app. “For millions of people, komoot is the key to the great outdoors. From intrepid explorers and experienced off-roaders, to those who just bought their first road bike, our technology allows everybody to better find, plan and live authentic outdoor experiences.” At The Bicycle Academy we love to explore the great outdoors. Many of our students chose to make...

Ahooga Bikes : Folding-Yet-Highly-Efficient

Frédéric Mertens came to The Bicycle Academy with a plan. His ambition was to help liberate commuters from the mental stresses and physical strains associated with travel to work. We created a customised 10 day bicycle building course that helped Frédéric to realise his ambitions and create a prototype folding bicycle frame. This frame was the starting point for his company Ahooga Bikes. In this article Frédéric tells us all about his ideas and the experience he had at The Bicycle Academy. "Every day we get up, we go out and we are immediately faced with the challenge of mobility within a busy society. If we want to begin each day positively then we need to find ways to introduce serenity...

The Domestique - Graduates of The Bicycle Academy

At The Bicycle Academy we are proud that our reputation precedes us. We are fortunate to have taught and assisted some of the most exciting members of the frame building community. We don’t claim responsibility for the success of our former students but it is gratifying to hear them singing our praise.   Vol. 2 of the magazine The Domestique features an article that focuses on the work of the contemporary frame builders Rob Quirk and Adeline O’Moreau; graduates of The Bicycle Academy. The Domestique magazine describes themselves as a sports lifestyle publication inspired and created by the sub-culture communities that surround sports.  “We listen to those less heard stories, and document them by collaborating with some of the next generation...

Dario Pegoretti, the roots of frame building

On the 23rd of August 2018 the frame building world lost one of it's icons. Dario Pegoretti is one of the most important bicycle frame builders of our time, he was a long serving artisan, and an artist famed for his vivid custom paint jobs. A pioneer of new technology and a protector of the old craft, there are few who can rival Pegoretti's expertise. I was lucky enough to meet Dario a number of times, and just before opening The Bicycle Academy in 2012 I spent 4 days with him at a residential workshop in Verona, Italy building frames with a group of other students. This turned out to be more of a lesson in Italian culture than frame building; Dario was a man...

The Davey Bikes Full-Moto

Bikes designed and made to do quite a specific task always seem to turn out well if executed properly. Oliver from Davey Push Bikes really pulled it off with his Full-Moto project. This bike is designed for "having a blast in the woods - for relatively short, fast outings, providing the rider with the confidence to attack a trail and get loose, to be engaging and involving." To achieve this, Oliver "wanted a bike whose limits are easy to approach and fun to reach, something that I feel current mountain bike designs have failed to properly address." By designing the geometry of the frame to more mimic a motocross rider's position, their weight can be more on their feet leading to a...
