Dario Pegoretti, the roots of frame building

On the 23rd of August 2018 the frame building world lost one of it's icons. Dario Pegoretti is one of the most important bicycle frame builders of our time, he was a long serving artisan, and an artist famed for his vivid custom paint jobs. A pioneer of new technology and a protector of the old craft, there are few who can rival Pegoretti's expertise. I was lucky enough to meet Dario a number of times, and just before opening The Bicycle Academy in 2012 I spent 4 days with him at a residential workshop in Verona, Italy building frames with a group of other students. This turned out to be more of a lesson in Italian culture than frame building; Dario was a man...

The Davey Bikes Full-Moto

Bikes designed and made to do quite a specific task always seem to turn out well if executed properly. Oliver from Davey Push Bikes really pulled it off with his Full-Moto project. This bike is designed for "having a blast in the woods - for relatively short, fast outings, providing the rider with the confidence to attack a trail and get loose, to be engaging and involving." To achieve this, Oliver "wanted a bike whose limits are easy to approach and fun to reach, something that I feel current mountain bike designs have failed to properly address." By designing the geometry of the frame to more mimic a motocross rider's position, their weight can be more on their feet leading to a...

Grinduro Scotland 2018

Grinduro, with it’s varied timed sections ranging from gravel road climbs to technical descents was back in Scotland for it's second visit last month.  There really is no perfect bike (or rider) for the event, and this is what gives it it’s charm. The event always has a certain “run what you brung” feel which everyone loves with bikes this year ranging from fixies to tall fat-bikes! As such it attracts a broad spectrum of riders of all styles to the Isle of Arran, who maybe wouldn’t normally get a chance to ride together. That is the magic of Grinduro. We were approached by Giro when the American sensation first planned a visit to UK shores.  With full support from Columbus and...

Frame Flex - GCN Tech

A few months ago GCN came to The Bicycle Academy to shoot a short series about frame building, covering each of the main steps of the process as Simon built his very own custom frame. During the shoot we had some long discussions about the different approaches that can be taken with frame design and the subject of frame stiffness was one we debated quite a bit. This isn't surprising as, after all, it is the main variable than can be altered during material selection, but interestingly it was clear that each of us had a different understanding of the actual result of stiffness and flex in terms of real life performance. The truth is that frame stiffness has a...

Global Cycling Network x The Bicycle Academy

Around a year ago we were approached by the Simon Richardson at Global Cycling Network to help them build their dream steel bicycle. It sounded like it would be lots of fun, but we were so busy that it simply wasn’t possible for us to fit them in until recently. Simon’s brief to us was [...]
